Cement in India

Limestone, Geography and Where Plants Sit

Cement plants cluster where limestone is plentiful, and because cement is bulky the industry splits into regional markets with different prices.

Location decides a lot in cement. The rock has to come out of the ground nearby, and the finished product cannot travel too far without becoming expensive.

Where the rock is

Large limestone reserves lie in states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. Many big plants sit in these belts.

Freight limits the market

Trucking or hauling cement long distances adds a big share to its price. So a plant mostly serves buyers within a few hundred kilometres.

Regional markets

India is really several cement markets: South, West, North, East and Central. Each has its own mix of producers, demand and prices.

Mining rights

Firms need a licence or lease to mine limestone, so access to reserves is a major advantage.

Two prices in one country

A bag of cement can cost a little more in one region than another, because local supply, demand and freight differ.

Assuming one national cement price

Prices vary by region and season.

Key takeaways
  • Plants cluster near limestone.
  • High freight costs keep markets regional.
  • Prices differ across regions.
  • Owning reserves is a lasting advantage.
