India's Core Industries
India's Cement Giants
How India became the world's second-largest cement producer, why the industry is consolidating around a few giants, and what drives cement demand.
Cement binds concrete, the most used building material on Earth. India is the world’s second-largest cement producer, after China.
Demand drivers
- Housing, especially in cities and through government schemes.
- Infrastructure: roads, bridges, metros, ports and airports.
- Commercial construction.
Consolidation
India’s cement industry has consolidated around a few large groups:
- UltraTech Cement (Aditya Birla Group), India’s largest, which bought several rivals including India Cements.
- Adani Group, which entered in 2022 by buying Ambuja Cements and ACC from Switzerland’s Holcim for about 10.5 billion dollars, and later acquired other companies.
- Other players such as Shree Cement, Dalmia Bharat and JK Cement.
Why consolidation?
- Economies of scale in plants and distribution.
- Limestone reserves: owning mines is a strategic advantage.
- Logistics: cement is heavy and cheap per tonne, so transport costs matter.
Competition concerns
With fewer, larger players, there are concerns about pricing power. India’s CCI penalised major cement companies for a cartel in 2012.
Emissions
Cement production releases CO2 both from fuel and from the chemical process of heating limestone. Companies use alternative fuels, blended cements and waste heat recovery to cut emissions.
Two cement giants bid for a mid-sized company with limestone mines in a growing region. Whoever wins gains market share and reduces transport costs to nearby construction sites.
The industry has consolidated around a few big groups, raising competition concerns.
- India is the world's second-largest cement producer.
- Housing and infrastructure drive demand.
- UltraTech and Adani lead a consolidating industry; Adani bought Ambuja and ACC in 2022.
- Scale, limestone and logistics drive consolidation.
