India's States: A Federal Economy
Gujarat: Industry and Ports
How Gujarat became one of India's most industrialised states, with major ports, petrochemicals and a strong trading tradition, and debates about its development model.
Gujarat, on India’s western coast, is one of the country’s most industrialised and fastest-growing states.
Strengths
- Coastline and ports: Gujarat has India’s longest coastline among states, and ports such as Mundra and Kandla, now Deendayal Port, handle a large share of India’s cargo.
- Industry: petrochemicals, refining, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, engineering and diamonds. The Jamnagar refinery complex, operated by Reliance Industries, is among the largest in the world.
- Trading tradition: Gujarati communities have long histories of trade and business, in India and abroad.
- Infrastructure: roads, power and industrial estates.
- Dairy cooperatives: Amul, based in Anand, grew into India’s largest dairy cooperative brand.
Growth and investment
Gujarat has consistently had higher growth in manufacturing than many states, attracting large investments in chemicals, cars and electronics. It holds investor summits to attract investment.
The debate
Gujarat’s development model has been widely debated:
- Supporters highlight fast growth, strong infrastructure, reliable electricity and business-friendly governance.
- Critics point out that Gujarat’s social indicators, such as child malnutrition and some health measures, have lagged behind its economic growth compared with states like Kerala or Tamil Nadu.
Separate electricity feeders
Gujarat’s Jyotigram Yojana, launched in 2003, separated electricity feeders for agriculture from those for households and businesses. This allowed reliable round-the-clock power for villages while rationing farm power, reducing groundwater overuse and improving utility finances. Other states have studied the model.
Along Gujarat's coast, areas once used mainly for salt making now host major ports, industrial zones and power plants. Goods from northern India reach world markets through these ports. Gujarat's geography, combined with investment in port infrastructure, made it a gateway for India's trade.
Gujarat's experience shows that strong economic growth and infrastructure do not automatically produce equally strong health and nutrition outcomes. Targeted social investment matters too.
- Gujarat is one of India's most industrialised states, with major ports.
- Petrochemicals, refining, chemicals, textiles and diamonds are key industries.
- Supporters praise its growth and infrastructure; critics note lagging social indicators.
- The Jyotigram scheme separated farm and household power feeders from 2003.
