Podcasts and the Audio Economy

How podcasts and audiobooks grew into a major media industry, how creators make money, and why audio suits busy and blind audiences.

Podcasts, on-demand audio programmes that listeners can stream or download, have grown from a niche hobby into a major media industry. Alongside audiobooks, they form a growing audio economy.

Growth

Podcasts first appeared in the early 2000s, but grew rapidly in the 2010s as smartphones made listening easy. Millions of podcasts now exist on almost every topic. India has become one of the world’s large podcast markets, with many shows in Hindi and other languages.

How podcasts make money

  • Advertising: hosts read adverts or insert pre-recorded ones. Advertisers value the loyal, engaged audiences.
  • Subscriptions and memberships: listeners pay for bonus content or ad-free episodes through platforms like Patreon or apps.
  • Platform deals: Spotify paid large sums for exclusive rights to popular podcasts in the late 2010s and early 2020s, though it later shifted strategy.
  • Live events and merchandise.

As with other creative industries, a small number of popular shows earn most of the money, while most podcasts earn little.

Audiobooks

Audiobooks have been one of the fastest-growing parts of publishing. Services like Audible and Spotify offer large audiobook libraries. Advances in AI narration have lowered production costs, though they raise questions for human narrators.

Why audio suits many listeners

  • Multitasking: people listen while commuting, exercising or doing chores.
  • Accessibility: audio is naturally accessible to blind and visually impaired people, and to those with reading difficulties.
  • Low data use compared with video.
A small show finds its niche

A teacher starts a podcast explaining economics in simple Hindi. It costs little to produce, needing only a microphone and editing software. Over time, thousands of students listen regularly. A small sponsorship from an education company covers costs. Audio's low barriers let niche creators reach dedicated audiences.

Thinking most podcasters earn a living from podcasting

Most podcasts earn little or no money. Like other creator industries, podcasting follows a pattern where a few shows earn most revenue.

Key takeaways
  • Podcasts and audiobooks form a fast-growing audio economy.
  • Podcasts earn money through advertising, subscriptions, platform deals and events.
  • A few shows earn most of the revenue.
  • Audio suits multitaskers and is naturally accessible to blind listeners.
