MSMEs: The Backbone of India's Economy

What MSMEs Are

Micro, small and medium enterprises are India's smaller businesses, defined by investment and turnover, and they employ more people than any large-firm sector.

MSME stands for micro, small and medium enterprises. They range from a one-person workshop to a factory with a large turnover.

The definition

Since 2020, firms are classed by investment in plant and machinery and by annual turnover. Micro firms are the smallest, then small, then medium.

Udyam registration

Firms can register on the Udyam portal, which gives them an official identity and access to schemes.

Why they matter

MSMEs are often described as the backbone of the economy because they provide vast numbers of jobs, supply larger firms and spread industry across regions.

A local workshop

A small unit making nuts and bolts sells to auto-parts makers, and employs a dozen people from nearby villages.

Assuming small means unimportant

Together, MSMEs contribute a large share of output and exports.
