How Nonprofits Actually Make Money
The main revenue sources nonprofits rely on, and why 'nonprofit' doesn't mean an organization avoids money entirely.
A nonprofit organization can absolutely earn, hold and spend significant money - the “nonprofit” label refers specifically to what happens with any surplus, not to whether the organization generates revenue at all. Rather than distributing profit to owners or shareholders, a nonprofit reinvests any surplus back into its stated mission.
The main sources of nonprofit revenue
Nonprofits typically draw on several different income streams: individual donations, grants from foundations or government agencies, corporate sponsorships, membership fees, and increasingly, earned revenue - money made by selling a product or service directly related to the mission, such as ticket sales for a museum or program fees for a workshop.
An education-focused nonprofit might fund its work through a combination of individual donations from supporters, a grant from a foundation specifically for one program, corporate sponsorship of an annual event, and modest fees charged for a paid workshop series - relying on no single source for the majority of its budget, which generally makes the organization more financially resilient.
Why “restricted” and “unrestricted” matters enormously
Restricted funds are donations or grants that must be used for a specific purpose the donor designated - a particular program, a specific project - and can’t legally be redirected elsewhere, even to cover a genuine and urgent need. Unrestricted funds can be used for any legitimate organizational purpose, including overhead and operating costs, giving the organization far more flexibility.
A donor giving specifically to fund a particular program cannot have that money redirected to cover, say, rent or staff salaries, even during a genuine cash crunch - doing so would violate the terms of the gift. This is why many nonprofits actively encourage unrestricted giving, even though restricted, program-specific donations are often easier for donors to feel connected to.
- "Nonprofit" describes what happens to surplus revenue, not whether an organization earns money at all.
- Common revenue sources include donations, grants, sponsorships, membership fees and earned revenue.
- Diversifying across multiple revenue sources generally makes an organization more financially resilient.
- Restricted funds can only be used for their designated purpose; unrestricted funds offer far more flexibility.
