Retail in India

India's Retail Landscape

How India's huge retail market is still dominated by small independent shops, and how supermarkets, e-commerce and quick commerce are changing it.

Retail - selling goods to consumers - is one of the largest parts of India’s economy and one of its biggest employers.

A market of small shops

Unlike many rich countries, where big chains dominate, India’s retail has long been dominated by small, independent stores:

  • Kirana grocery stores in almost every neighbourhood.
  • Street vendors and weekly markets.
  • Small clothing, electronics and pharmacy shops.

India has over a crore of small retail outlets, and most retail sales still happen through traditional or unorganised channels, though their share is slowly falling.

Organised retail

Organised or modern retail includes:

  • Supermarket chains such as DMart and Reliance Retail’s stores.
  • Specialty chains for electronics, fashion and eyewear.
  • E-commerce marketplaces.
  • Quick commerce apps delivering in minutes.

Drivers of change

  • Urbanisation and rising incomes.
  • Smartphones and cheap data.
  • Digital payments, especially UPI.
  • Changing lifestyles: busier households want convenience.
  • GST, which made interstate supply chains simpler.

Why traditional retail persists

  • Proximity: a kirana is often a few steps away.
  • Relationships and credit.
  • Low costs: family labour and owned premises.
  • Small purchases: buying daily in small quantities.

Jobs

Retail employs tens of millions of people, from shopkeepers and staff to delivery workers and warehouse employees. Changes in retail affect livelihoods across the country.

Policy debates

India restricts foreign investment in multi-brand retail and regulates e-commerce to protect small traders, balancing modernisation with livelihoods.

Three ways to buy rice

In one city, a family buys rice from the neighbourhood kirana on credit, another buys a large bag at a supermarket on the weekend, and a third orders it through a quick commerce app, delivered in ten minutes. All three coexist.

Thinking modern retail has already replaced small shops

Most Indian retail sales still happen through small, independent stores, even as modern retail grows.

Key takeaways
  • Indian retail is dominated by small independent shops like kiranas.
  • Organised retail, e-commerce and quick commerce are growing.
  • Urbanisation, smartphones, UPI and GST drive change.
  • Retail is a major employer, and policy balances modernisation with livelihoods.
