The New Law: VB-G RAM G
In December 2025 Parliament passed the VB-G RAM G Act, which replaces MGNREGA from 1 July 2026 and raises the guarantee to 125 days.
After nearly twenty years, the framework changed.
Passage
The Viksit Bharat, Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act was passed by Parliament in December 2025 and received the President’s assent on 21 December.
Start date
It came into force on 1 July 2026, when MGNREGA was repealed.
What it offers
A statutory guarantee of 125 days of wage employment a year to rural households whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work.
Focus
Works are organised around four themes: water security, core rural infrastructure, livelihood infrastructure and climate-resilient works.
A household that once had a 100-day ceiling now has a 125-day legal entitlement.
The design and funding also differ.
