Steel in India

India's Major Steel Companies

JSW, Tata Steel, SAIL, JSPL and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel lead the industry, alongside many smaller producers.

Steel in India is a mix of state companies, big private groups and a long tail of small mills.

SAIL

The Steel Authority of India is a public-sector company with plants at Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bokaro and Burnpur.

Private groups

Tata Steel, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel and Power are large private producers, with JSW and Tata among the biggest.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel

This joint venture, based at Hazira in Gujarat, acquired Essar Steel through the insolvency process.

Small mills

Hundreds of smaller induction furnace units produce long products such as construction bars for local markets.

Public and private

A construction firm may buy bars from a small local mill, while a car maker buys specialised sheet from a large integrated producer.

Assuming steel is only a government business

Private groups now dominate output.

Key takeaways
  • SAIL is the main public-sector producer.
  • Tata, JSW and JSPL are major private firms.
  • AM/NS took over Essar Steel.
  • Small mills serve local markets.
