Shipping, Logistics & How Stuff Gets to You

What Logistics Is and Why It Matters

How the planning and movement of goods, from factory to shelf, became a major industry, and why logistics costs affect prices and growth.

Before a product reaches you, it may have crossed oceans, passed through several ports and warehouses, and been loaded onto trucks, trains and vans. Logistics is the work of planning and managing this movement and storage of goods. A supply chain is the whole network of companies involved, from raw materials to the final customer.

What logistics includes

Logistics covers many activities:

  • Transport by ship, rail, road and air.
  • Warehousing: storing goods until they are needed.
  • Inventory management: deciding how much stock to hold and where.
  • Packaging and handling.
  • Customs and paperwork for goods crossing borders.
  • Information systems that track goods and coordinate every step.

Why logistics costs matter

Logistics costs, the total cost of moving and storing goods, are a significant share of the economy. In the United States, they are often estimated at around 8 percent of GDP. In India, government-commissioned estimates have put logistics costs at a higher share of GDP. India’s National Logistics Policy, launched in 2022, aims to bring these costs down to make Indian goods more competitive.

High logistics costs act like a tax on trade. They raise the prices consumers pay and make it harder for exporters to compete.

Time matters too

Lead time, how long it takes for goods to arrive after they are ordered, is as important as cost. Long and unpredictable lead times force businesses to hold more inventory, tying up money. The World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index ranks countries on the speed, reliability and quality of their logistics.

A shirt's journey

A cotton shirt might start as cotton grown in India, spun into yarn in one factory, woven into fabric in another, sewn into a shirt in Bangladesh, shipped in a container to Europe, stored in a distribution centre, and delivered to a shop or a customer's home. Each step involves logistics. Improvements at any point can lower the final price.

Thinking logistics is just trucks and ships

Moving goods is only part of logistics. Planning, information, inventory and paperwork matter just as much. Many of the biggest improvements in recent decades came from better tracking and coordination, not faster vehicles.

Key takeaways
  • Logistics plans and manages the movement and storage of goods.
  • A supply chain is the full network from raw materials to the final customer.
  • Logistics costs act like a tax on trade; India's 2022 National Logistics Policy aims to lower them.
  • Lead time and reliability matter as much as cost.
