UPI and Digital Payments in India

Fraud, Scams and Safety

As UPI grew, so did fraud, and users must guard against phishing, fake QR codes and social engineering.

Safe habits are essential.

Common scams

Fraudsters send fake collect requests, cloned apps or QR codes that seem to send money but actually withdraw it.

Social engineering

They pose as bank officials and pressure victims into sharing a PIN or OTP.

Safe habits

Never share PINs or OTPs, verify the payee name, and use only official apps.

Reporting

Frauds can be reported to the helpline 1930 and to the bank promptly.

A fake refund

A caller says money was sent by mistake and asks you to 'return it' via a link, which is a scam.

Trusting unsolicited calls

Banks do not ask for your PIN.

Key takeaways
  • Fraud has grown with volumes.
  • Scammers use pressure and tricks.
  • Never share your PIN or OTP.
  • Report quickly.
