Flipkart, Amazon and the Walmart Deal

Flipkart and Amazon dominate, and Walmart bought a majority of Flipkart in 2018 in one of the largest e-commerce deals.

Two big platforms lead the market.

Flipkart

Founded by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, it grew into India’s largest domestic e-commerce firm.

Amazon

Entered India in 2013 and invested heavily in warehouses and logistics.

The deal

In 2018 Walmart bought about 77 per cent of Flipkart for around $16 billion.

Competition

Both spend heavily on discounts, advertising and delivery, and both face regulatory scrutiny.

A festival sale

During the festive season, both platforms hold big sales to attract customers.

Believing the giants have no rivals

Meesho, Myntra, Nykaa and others compete strongly.
