E-Commerce and Quick Commerce in India

How Online Shopping Reached India

Cheap data, smartphones and digital payments took e-commerce from a niche to a mainstream way of buying in little over a decade.

E-commerce means buying and selling through the internet. In India it grew when phones, data and payments all became cheap.

Early years

Companies like Flipkart, founded in 2007, started by selling books and then expanded to electronics and fashion.

Enablers

Low-cost data after 2016, UPI payments and better delivery networks widened the market.

Who buys

Shoppers from big cities were first; now much growth comes from smaller towns.

First online order

A student in a small town orders a phone on a sale day because the local shop does not stock the model.

Thinking online shopping replaced stores

Most retail is still offline.

Key takeaways
  • E-commerce is buying and selling online.
  • Cheap data and UPI helped.
  • Flipkart began in 2007.
  • Small towns drive growth.
